Drag Me Down in the A.M.

Prologue

            They walk to each other. Arok gives a gaze at Dedes, but she doesn’t even look at him and walks pass him. Nevertheless, it was love at the first sight.

Monologue:

Arok      : Is it true? I don’t know if I deserve it. To breath the same air, to see the same sky ... with her.

Scene 1

Setting: Dais on which the bridal couple sits.

Description of situation: The marriage of Tunggul Ametung and Ken Dedes.

*(Tunggul Ametung pulls Dedes’ hand and makes her sit on dressing chair. The servants help to dress her.This is the marriage of Tunggul Ametung and Ken Dedes, however she does not look happy.)

1. Tunggul Ametung: 1). Make her to be the most beautiful bride ever! (ordering the servants)

2. Servants                  : 1). Yes, Sir.

*(The bride is ready. Tunggul Ametung and Ken Dedes sit in state. Dedes starts to weep her tears.)

3.  Tunggul Ametung: 1). Won’t you smile? 2). Remember! 3). It’s easy for me to kill your mother if you rebel.

Scene 2

Setting: At the gambling venue.

Description of the situation: Arok, Tita, and Bango play gamble.

The full moon is in the dark sky might be fun to be viewed together with an idol of the heart are desirable, but this is slightly different to that felt by a man whose life is miserable, with no father and mother, and only with an old woman who likes to gamble as his mother.

That night was the night when people enchanted with their pillows and blankets, enjoying their each dreams and the right time for Ken Arok, Tita, his colleague, and his mother to work.

1. Ika               : 1). No way! 2). It can’t be like this! 3). I believe there’s something wrong with this.

2. Bango S      : 1). Calm down, Ika. 2). You have to admit it. 3). All of this money is mine.

3. Ika               : 1). It’s enough. 2). I go now!

*(Ken Arok, Tita and Bango S are happy with their victory. They slap their hands to others as a sign of their succesful cheat.)

*(Dan Hyang Loh Gawe, Tunggul Ametung’s assistant, has been waiting for Arok. She tries to give advise to Arok.)

4. Dan Hyang : 1). You played good, huh? (calm for a while) 2). But cheating and dishonest don’t make it a victory.

*(Arok feels annoyed with Dan Hyang’s statement yet he realizes his badness)

5. Dan Hyang  : 1). I read people, young man! 2). And yes, I read you. 3). You have a great destiny if you walk on what really become your path.

6. Arok            : 1). And what destiny would I have?

7.  Dan Hyang : 1). The man who hold the power. 2). You are a cunning thief. 3). You have been doing much mischief and crimes. 4). But why do you waste your time on something dull?

8. Arok            : 1). Tell me your point.

9. Dan Hyang  : 1). I offer you a place as Tunggul Ametung’s attendant. 2). You know him. 3). The powerful leader of Tumapel Company.

10. Arok          : (laugh and think that it is ridiculous but suddenly thinking)

11. Dan Hyang: 1). I don’t give chance to anyone. 2). Think about it! 3). This is your time to abandon your sinful life and start a new life. 4). I will wait.

*(Bango and Tita come)

12. Tita            : 1). Arok! 2). What is the matter?

13. Bango        : 1). We have been waiting for you.

14. Arok          : 1). I ... I want to change my path.

15. Bango        : 1). What are you talking about?

16. Arok          :  1). I have to go. I want to change my life.

17. Bango        : 1). Have you found the thing you want to do, my son?

18. Arok          : 1) After I think about it. 2). So close.

19. Bango        : 1). Well. If that’s what you want. 2). You have to know that eventhough I am not your real mother, but I love like my own son. 3) Go! Get your dream.

20. Tita            : 1). Wait, No! 2). You can’t leave!

21. Arok          : 1). Sorry! You are my good friend, and will always be my good friend!

22. Tita            : 1). But, I....

Scene 3

Setting: At Tunggul Ametung’s house.

Description of the situation:

Ken Arok started his new job as Tunggul Ametung attendant. Until one night, when the hand of clock stops at 12, Ken Arok accidentally saw Ken Dedes, Tunggul Ametung’s wife, from the other side walking straight to him. He gives a bow and she just passes by. She goes in the direction of the living room accompanied by her servant, Mirah, who is fanning her while holding her sleepiness. Dedes tries to read a book to kill her insomnia.

1. Dedes          : 1). Can you do it faster, Mirah? 2). The night becomes hotter and I can not sleep yet.

*(Dedes without change her attention, she asks Mirah to swing the fan faster.)

2. Mirah          : 1.) Yes, Ma’am. 2). Mmmm, can I do it while sitting Ma’am?

3. Dedes          : 1). Hm. (answer shortly)

*(Mirah swings the fan faster and faster. Without knowing, Dedes’ untied hair fly every which way and her beautiful neck and  shoulder seen by Arok)

4. Dedes          : 1). Too fast, Mirah. (She is about too angry but she is smiling instead) 2). Mirah, do I  look pathetic?

5. Mirah          : 1). What makes you say so, Ma’am?

6. Dedes          : 1). Is it okay to marry the man you even hate to see? 2). I’m still alive but I am not curious about death ... because I feel it every day.

7. Mirah          : 1). This whole time  must be so hard for you to endure suffering, Ma’am. 2). But there is always a light at the end of darkness. 3). Maybe you just need to be stonger, Ma’am.

8. Dedes          : 1). I don’t know if it was wise to talk about this matter with you. 2). But you are a help. 3). Thank you.

9. Mirah          : 1). No problem, Ma’am.

*(Arok, who is watching secretly from another side, falls to Dedes’ absolute beauty. Then, Tunggul Ametung comes.)

10. Tunggul Ametung: 1). My dearest wife. 2). It seems like you see that book more often than you see me, your husband. (give a sign with his hand to Mirah to leave him and Dedes alone).

11. Dedes        : 1). You are still awake. 2). Is there anything you need?

12. Tunggul Ametung: 1). You. 2). Why don’t we go to bed?

*(Arok hits something. Tunggul Ametung and Dedes hear a loud.)

13. Tunggul Ametung: 1). Who is there?

14. Arok          : (come from his hideaway) 1). It’s me, Sir. 2) Your new attendant.

15. Tunggul Ametung: 1). What are you doing there in this hour?

16. Arok          : 1). I’m just .... check ... everything.

17. Tunggul Ametung: 1). You are dilligent. 2). What’s your name?

18. Arok          : 1). Ken Arok, sir.

*(Arok and Dedes exchange their sight once, twice, three times.)

19. Tunggul Ametung: (nodding) 1). You can go.

20. Arok          : 1). Good night, Sir. Ma’am.

Scene 4

Setting: Mr. Gandring’s house/office.

Description of the situation: Arok meets Mr. Gandring and the assasination of Mr. Gandring.

Ken Arok, already infatuated by Dedes’ beauty, became even more eager to take her, by any means—including killing Tunggul Ametung, if necessary. Tunggul Ametung however is a very powerful man and holds an important position. Thus, Ken Arok needs an exceptionally strong weapon to defeat him, and also have to find a way to do so without himself being punished for the crime. He manages to get by ordering a gun from a famous gun maker called Mr. Gandring.

1. Arok            : 1). Mr. Gandring?

2. Mr. Gandring: 1). That’s me. (sitting on his chair while rubbing his gun) 2). What brings you here?

3. Arok            : 1). I was told...

*(Mr. Gandring cuts Arok’s sentence)

4. Mr. Gandring: 1). told by whom?

5. Arok            : 1). ...my mother, Mrs. Bango.

6. Mr. Gandring: 1). Hmm, Bango? 2). I don’t know if she has a son.

7. Arok            : 1). I was adopted, Sir. 2). But that is not the reason I come. 3). I need you to make a strong weapon.

8. Mr. Gandring: 1). For what purpose?

9. Arok            : 1). It’s none of your business.

10. Mr. Gandring: (sighs) 1). Alright. 2). Give me your qulification.

*(Arok gives a piece of paper)

11. Arok          : 1). Like this.

12. Mr. Gandring: (after he reads it for a while)

                        1). Six months.

13. Arok          : 1). Pardon?

14. Mr. Gandring: 1). It will be done after six months.

15. Arok          :  1). Too long.

16. Mr. Gandring: 1). NO! Six months or not at all.

17. Arok          : 1). Fine.

However the gun casting took a very long time. After several months, an impatient Ken Arok visits Mr. Gandring to check on the gun's progress.

18. Arok          : 1). Is that mine? (take and hold the gun) 2). The gun has already taken shape and is strong enough to be called an exceptional weapon.

19. Mr. Gandring: (take the weapon from Arok) 1). I still need several months to make it done. 2). Not only to make it strong but also to prevent it from becoming an evil weapon. 3). Be patient!

20. Arok          : (sigh hardly and leave angrily)

*(After Arok left, someone mysterious with the black long coat comes at 12.am.)

21. Mr. Gandring: (know the coming but do not face the person)  1). I said I still need several months. 2). Why do you come back?” (but after he hears no answer, he turns his body and gets surprised)

*(The mysterious person takes the gun from Mr. Gandring. They threaten each other by pointing a weapon in their hands.)

22. Mr. Gandring: 1). Who are you? (try to shot, but fail.) *(The mysterious man shots Mr. Gandring and he fells.)

23. Mr. Gandring: 1). Tell Arok that he himself and seven generations of his descendants would be killed by that gun. (die)

Scene 5

Setting: At the kitchen of Tunggul Ametung’s house.

Description of the situation: Jojo show-off the weapon. Ken Arok tries to get Dedes’ attention.

One day, Jojo, another attendant of Tunggul Ametung, finds a gun. It is the gun stolen from Mr. Gandring. She is known for her greedy and intended to show-off personality. After found that gun, she claims her self as the owner of it to every people she meets.

*(When the servants gather)

1. Jojo              : 1). You see this weapon? 2). So beautiful, glamorous, and desirable. 3). I bet all of men in this city want it when they see it.

2. Mirah           : 1). But whose weapon is that? (ask curiously)

3. Jojo              : 1). Of course it is mine! (claim with high pitch)

4. Servant 1     : 1). Where did you get that?

5. Servant 2     : 1). What is it made of?

6. Servant 1     : 1). What do you use it for?

7. Servant 2     : 1). Is it really yours? 2). It does not suit you well.

8. Jojo              : 1). Why do you have so many stupid questions? 2). It is clearly mine. 3). No doubt. 4). If you don’t believe me, you can leave.

9. Servant 1     : 1). So cocky.

10. Servant 2   : 1). She’s weird.

11. Mirah         : 1). Let’s just go.

12. Jojo            : 1). Go! Go! Envious people.

*(Dedes comes to make a cup of tea)

13. Dedes        : 1). Who are you talking to?

14. Jojo            : (smiling and hiding the gun) 1). Nobody, Ma’am. 2). Can I help you?

15. Dedes        : 1). It’s okay. 2). I just want to make a cup of tea for Tunggul Ametung.

16. Jojo            : 1). Good night, Ma’am.

*(Ken arok comes)

17. Arok          : 1).  A woman should not be so beautiful since the moon and the stars will get jealous.

18. Dedes        : 1). What do you mean?

19. Arok          : 1). What I mean is I have fallen for your beauty.

20. Dedes        : 1). You! (Dedes looks at Arok with surprised look and somewhat angry) 2). How could you say such as thing.

21. Arok          : 1). Can’t you see my charm? 2). You have to know Ma’am if I could change to be a king if my woman wants it.

22. Dedes        : 1). Are you bluffing about your nonsense thought?

                        (Dedes does not seem to open her heart yet)

23. Arok          : 1). I never speak nonsense. I speak considerate thought.

24. Dedes          : 1). Really? 2). A man should keep his words to prove his honor.

  (Dedes feels annoyed yet can not resist Arok’s spell)

25. Arok       : 1). Sure. 2). Then, will you be the honor of my poor life?

26. Dedes     : 1). Get your self together. 2). This is not a matter you can dreaming about.

27. Arok       : 1). But, however, I am sure my dream is going to be real.

28. Dedes     : (Dedes is bashful while trying to maintain her self-esteem) 1). You are too confident. 2). You have to face so many restrictions after you, poor man. 3). If you   can go by those restrictions, maybe you can get what you want. (Dedes puts a smile on her face)

29. Arok       : 1). Just wait and see. When I want it, I will have it.

30. Dedes     :1). So, what are you doing in the kitchen at the midnight?

31. Arok       : 1). Ah! I saw a very bright light from here, but after I chased the light, it was you. (smiling) 2). Have a good night, Ma’am.

(Dedes finishes making the tea and going to give it to her husband)

Scene 6

Setting: At Tunggul Ametung’s office.

Description of the situation: The assasination of Tunggul Ametung

The night after, at 12 a.m., Tunggul Ametung is sitting in his room,  he closes his eyes while listening to the music from the radio. The mysterious man comes bringing the weapon. It is a perfect time to shot him in his heart. He left the gun at the location.

*Dedes silently sees this tragedy. She looses her hands that holding a cup of tea. The murderer hears the sound of the breaking. Dedes runs to find some helps)

Scene 7

Setting: At the garden in front of the house.

Description of the situation: Jojo is arrested Arok propose Dedes.

The next day, Jojo comes while searching for something.

1. Mirah           : 1). There she is! (pointing at Jojo)

*(the police officer arrests Jojo right away)

2). Police officer: 1). You are under arrested for the accusation of a murder case of Mr. Tunggul Ametung last night.

3).  Jojo           : 1). What?! 2). NO! 3). It’s not me!

4). Police officer: 1). We found this weapon at the location and the witnesses said that it is yours.

5). Jojo            : 1). It is. 2). But I lost it and I’m searching for it.

6. Police office: 1). You better follow me, Miss.

*(She refuses to come but the police officer enforce her.)

Arok meets Dedes at the middle of her steps. They gaze to each other. They pass by, but after few steps they stop. Their eyes meet.

1. Dedes          : 1). You are his person, aren’t you?

2. Arok            : (turn around) 2). Yes.

3. Dedes          : 1). My suffering ends. 2). I hate him but I’m sorry for him. 3). My heart never accept him. 4). This child will grow well eventhough his father has gone. (hold and stroke her stomach which is getting bigger.

*(after couple months)

Dedes gave birth to her son, Nusa. The baby is sleeping. She carries him in her arms while takes a walk with Mirah.

1. Dedes            : 1). My precious son. 2). You will be a great person. 3). Mommy love you. (Kiss the baby)

*(It happens again. They meet in the middle and give a gaze to each other.)

2. Dedes            : 1). Can you take him to his bed, Mirah? (giving the baby)

3. Mirah             : 1). Yes, Ma’am.

2. Arok              : (kneed in front of Dedes) 1). Do you remember the first time we met?

*(Dedes is silent and surprised)

                          2). I am not sure too. 3). But I fell for your beauty at the first sight. 4). The most beautiful moment in my life.

3. Dedes            : 1). I don’t know what to say.

4. Arok              : 2). Say yes then. 3). I want to marry you. (holding ring in his hand) 4). I will take care of you and Nusa. 5). I promise. 6). I have been loving you, even when you were covered by the shadow. 7). And I’ll be loving you for the rest of my life.

5. Dedes            : (she is about to cry)

                          1). I remember. 2). I knew you. 3). In fact, you were the first man I always dreaming about. 4). But I never dare to look. 5). Can I have the man that I love now?

*(they burst in tears and going to hug each other)

Scene 8

Setting: At the living room.

Description of the situation: Nusa finds the truth then he kills Arok.

Forty years later.

Nusa, Ken Arok’s stepson, comes home very late. Arok has been waiting at the living room. He is mad at Nusa. Nusa hates his stepfather’s attitude. He is going to go to his room but his mother comes.

1. Arok            : 1). Where have you been? (speak angrily)  2). Being young makes you rude. 3). Useless! 4). Get off of my sight.

*(Nusa gives a strong glare at Arok and leaves angrily)

2. Dedes          : 1). Why are you so late? 2). I’m worrying about you.

3. Nusa            : 1). Mom, Why he never treat me well? 2). Did you hear what he said? 3). That bastard said that I’m useless.

4. Dedes          : (shock) 1). My son! 2). Eventhough he is not your father ... (accidentally saying the the truth)

5. Nusa            : 1). What? 2). Tell me once again, Mom. 3). Tell me the truth. 4). Who is my father then? 5). I have to know. 6). Mom, let me know.

6. Dedes          : 1). He died. 2). Murdered. 3). I’m sorry. (cry)

*(Nusa walks away from his mother.)

7. Nusa            : 1). It must be him. 2). He killed my father. (speak in a whisper. He takes a gun from his bag. With fire in his eyes he walks to Arok and )

                         3). He has to pay for everything. 4). Ken Aroook!

*(Arok who is standing in front of the window while folding his both hands at his back turns around. Nusa shots directly on his chest. The shirt changes to red of his blood. He is in pain and fall. Dedes hears the tragedy and runs to Arok who is laid out on the floor. She holds her husband’s head and put him in her arms. She cries. Nusa slowly goes to Arok’s room, touches the Arok’s chair, and with full of satifaction he sits on it.)

8). Dedes         : 1). Hold on!

9). Arok          : (hold her hand tightly) 1).Thank you for the honor of being my wife. 2). I’m a man with no regrets. 3). I love you.

*(Arok dies in Dedes’ arms)

Epilogue

They walk to each other. Arok gives a gaze at Dedes, but she doesn’t even look at him and walks pass him. Nevertheless, it was love at the first sight. Before take another step, they turn around, and stare at each other.

Dedes  : It’s true. We deserve to each other.

(they smile)
